On one level, you get that it isn't our fault, really. Our brains are hard-wired to seek out food in both quantity and variety. Survival instinct: honed to a sharp point over hundreds of thousands of years, landing us at the tip of the food chain.
And it's only been in the last hundred years that we have the means to conquer hunger, although power tripping/politics/cash lust still leaves over a billion of us humans on planet earth malnourished each day. So keeping hunger at bay is still a part of our brain's main directives. (Try skipping a few meals and watch what happens to your mood, your energy, your anger and aggressiveness and judgment.)
But when you begin to Wake Up, your consciousness opens enough to buy you the merest crack between the hard wiring of your brain and something called Free Will, which most people think they already have but almost no one really does. With this opening, you can begin to actually make choices, instead of blindly following the directives set forth by your brain's hard wiring.
Maybe you think that gorgeous hunka stuff eyeballing you at the backyard party is going to make everything come together, you'll date and mate and cohabitate and all your No will go poof, scooted out by the obvious Yes radiating out of their sea green eyes, pouring off their fingertips and into your skin.
Or maybe you will finally arrive at Yes because you've followed all the rules all these years. Been a good citizen, paid your taxes, been a good right hand man for your boss, a reliable and amusing coworker, kept your lawn trimmed and car washed. Or if you're a phreak, you've followed all the phreak rules closely, had odd hair/clothes/facial jewelry, been a vegan/fruitarian/lacto-ovo-pesce vegetarian, said disparaging things about The Man, practiced at least one alternative health care regimen from a different culture (ie Qi Gong, Yoga, Munay Ki, followed vitamin-herbal-supplement-superfood recommendations channelled by an ancient alien from the Pleiades).
But it's all the same stuff. It's all directives built into the brain. Eat, amass resources, procreate. Whether you do it with a crew cut or a faux hawk makes no difference.
But when you begin to Wake Up you actually see what's going on.
Before you begin to Wake Up, you think you know what's going on, and you gumflap the things you've read, and seen in others, and heard. You think they're yours, but they're just someone else's cud, pre-chewed by millions, and passed on down the line via mouth, net, tv, and town crier. But when you begin to Wake Up, you see with new eyes, you see not through the eyes of others but for yourself. And it's shocking, this seeing. Because you realize you've never really used your eyes before, and your stomach rolls at all the years you spent thinking you were seeing but were actually just being fed images via The Machine that is jacked into the hard wiring of your brain.
It's like a kid who grew up being beaten, and who thinks that being hit is normal, and they grow up and marry someone who beats them, because that's what they know, until one day, all of a sudden they understand: this person is beating me and it doesn't have to be like this and I don't have stay here, there's another way, and despite a brain screaming a million warnings, and a heart that feels as if it were going to explode, they pack up their sh*t, whatever they can fit in their car or their suitcase, and they leave.
So maybe you'll think this article on Sea Fruit has nothing to do with this post, but it does, in fact, it's perfect. Because it's all about Human Adulthood, about understanding that there are consequences to actions, that we, as a global species, stand at the edge of a great leap in consciousness, where we begin to move beyond the hard wiring in the brain, jacking into something much more fluid, much more vast, and a heck of a lot more fun.
For the next few days, just watch. Whenever and wherever you feel or see intense energy, either inside of you, or someone else, notice the hardwiring at it's source. Which one is it around: food, procreation, amassing resources, something else? Notice the programming. You're following a directive sent down the tunnels of time, straight into the dna that presently animates the architecture of You, the folks around you.
No need to actually Do anything. For now, just watch. And see what happens . . .
And when you see the crack, when you feel it, what then?
